ERIC STORIES




Here's an index page for all the stories I made when I was a schoolteacher. For 6 months in 2008 I taught English on a small island south of Korea. It was pretty great! I drew stories for the children which I would project onto the screen in the classroom, and act out for them. I'd also get them to repeat every line of dialogue, and I incorporated games, costumes and other exercises. The characters would recurr every week: Becky, Eric, Jin-su, and in later episodes, new character DRACULA. I think I was making about 4 stories a week at one point, so it ended up being a very good exercise in cartooning and storytelling.



I had a lot of fun with it. Each week I would increase the level of violence to see what it would take for my Korean co-teacher to start disapproving of the content in the stories I was writing. I never actually found out. There is one story where Jin-su sets a horse on fire and another where Eric accidentally slaughters seven of his own children and has to wheel off their bodies in a cart, and my Korean co-teacher never said a fucking thing. In fact, the horse episode was actually the first time a member of staff ever told me 'you are a good teacher.'

I had a lot of fun working on these stories and acting them out, getting instant feedback on what worked and what didn't. I'd have to perform each story 3 times a day, rewriting my stories as I went based on the kids' feedback, before posting them on livejournal in the afternoon. As a result of this process, I think these ended up being some of the tightest and most entertaining stuff I've done. So, I've made this post as an index page for my portfolio site to redirect to.
