100 Pirates In 100 Days
21st-Dec-2006 11:55 am

I'M FINISHED!

In September of this year I began my mission to draw one Pirate a day for 100 days straight, and today I cleaned up and uploaded Pirate number 100. I am mentally and physically exhausted. If this post is less than articulate it's because I have been up for many hours and my brain don't work properly. When I'm done posting this I am going to sleeeeeeeeeeeep. Still, It feels great to know I have finished on time or thereabouts.

I uploaded the images to a flickr set, where you can view the images as a slide show, leave comments and so on. For the sake of consistency with the rest of this blog I've also put all the images behind the cut tag below, but that might take a while to load and my friend whose webspace I use will hate me, so don't say I didn't warn you!

I should mention that since the drawings were originally commissioned for an online role-playing game, they depict not only pirates but the creatures whose world the pirates inhabit. I guess the title of this project might be slightly misleading, because a fish with a pirate hat on isn't strictly a pirate, but I hope no-one will hold that against me. I should also point out that I've ordered it so the first twenty or so are all the lowly skulking creatures and pirate children, the last 20 are the mighty warrior pirates, and then everything in between is everything in between. That's just so you don't get confused when you click the link expecting to see pirates and instead you see a bunch of fish wearing hats.

So that's the 100, pretty much on deadline give or take a couple of days!  I'd be lying if I said I found it easy to stick to the schedule, though. Some of these pirates took me three days to do each, so in the last couple of weeks I had to work at a rate of 5 pirates a day to get caught up. The Nintendo Wii coming out two weeks before the deadline didn't help matters, either. Still, I don't think the quality really suffered for all the last minute rushing.  Thanks to everybody who supported me along the way and said nice things.

I've got too many favorites to list, here's a few: #91 Monkey Alan of course, can't wait to see him in glorious colour. #66 & #67 Mary Reade & Anne Bonney, both incredible. #100 Beast Empress, so much to love about it. #4 Poisonous Frog. #57 Masqueradin' Skeleton is super skill clever stuff. #79 Solider Girl, I just adore the monkey canon ball gatherers. #18 Coil Snake and #88 Naoko are both favorite favorites. Then there are all the giraffes, ladybirds, tortoise/turtles, Anne Bonney's dead horses, Rooster Gone Bad's skull feathers, Old Nick's crab, Turtle Rider's flag, Theo's footwear and all the wonderful detail that will keep me coming back to look again and again. Thank you xxxxxxxxx
23rd-Dec-2006 01:02 am (UTC)
wow, very very very impressive, you are officially my role model :)
23rd-Dec-2006 07:44 am (UTC)
In case you didn't see this on your Flickr account:

An acquaintance of mine, who is sexually obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wishes to remind you that turtles have flippers, while tortoises don't, and you've made a few mistakes in this regard in your nomenclature. She demands that such oversights be corrected while she performs unnatural acts with a Raphael Pez dispenser.
23rd-Dec-2006 03:20 pm (UTC)
In America though they call both types of shelled animal 'turtles'. Sometimes I went for correctness and sometimes I went for whichever one sounded better.

I'll tell your friend where she can stick her pez dispenser :P

All the best!
27th-Dec-2006 06:29 am (UTC) - Very cool!
Congrats on finishing the project... very nifty. I've decided my favorite is #79, Soldier Girl. Really well-done, and I love the expression on her face, and on the faces of the monkeys. And I like the contrast between the bright, happy colors, adorable monkeys, kind-of sweet-looking girl (pigtails and such), overflowing treasure chest, and the dark elements (human head, cannon, skulltastic outfit). Fun!
28th-Dec-2006 02:52 pm (UTC)
its-a me!
good work man, the amount of detail in these is seriously impressive
as far as favourites, mmm.. i love the style of deadbeard, and the ape lord is awesome, but to be honest the standard is such that it's pretty much impossible to pick favourites out.
the beast empress looks like anne robinson.
and i like the way the masquerading skeleton has pugwash's face.
special mention must of course also go to "willie billiams".
i must say, the swashbuckling dog looks... familiar..
28th-Dec-2006 03:23 pm (UTC)
Beast Empress is a caricature of someone, it was commissioned for that person's birthday.

Swashbucklin' Dog was added in when I realised I was a couple of pirates short.

Hope you had a good christmas!

Want to know what I just saw on TV? Spy Kids 3D, motherfucker! That movie is amazing.

29th-Dec-2006 08:44 am (UTC)
I love Pappy, Octopus and Fisherman! Gotta love Naoko too.
30th-Dec-2006 10:10 pm (UTC)
These are terrific! My favorite is Anne Bonney. Such wonderful ideas, and so well executed. I found you from BoingBoing and the Drawn! blog. Thanks for posting!
