Teacher!! Eric die!!?
7th-Feb-2010 06:24 pm

Here's an index page for all the stories I made when I was a schoolteacher. For 6 months in 2008 I taught English on a small island south of Korea. It was pretty great! I drew stories for the children which I would project onto the screen in the classroom, and act out for them. I'd also get them to repeat every line of dialogue, and I incorporated games, costumes and other exercises. The characters would recurr every week: Becky, Eric, Jin-su, and in later episodes, new character DRACULA. I think I was making about 4 stories a week at one point, so it ended up being a very good exercise in cartooning and storytelling.

I had a lot of fun with it. Each week I would increase the level of violence to see what it would take for my Korean co-teacher to start disapproving of the content in the stories I was writing. I never actually found out. There is one story where Jin-su sets a horse on fire and another where Eric accidentally slaughters seven of his own children and has to wheel off their bodies in a cart, and my Korean co-teacher never said a fucking thing. In fact, the horse episode was actually the first time a member of staff ever told me 'you are a good teacher.'

I had a lot of fun working on these stories and acting them out, getting instant feedback on what worked and what didn't. I'd have to perform each story 3 times a day, rewriting my stories as I went based on the kids' feedback, before posting them on livejournal in the afternoon. As a result of this process, I think these ended up being some of the tightest and most entertaining stuff I've done. So, I've made this post as an index page for my portfolio site to redirect to. Here's an index of all the Eric Stories I published online to date!

It was my fave thing! I'm really torn between trying to make it as a comic book artist and just going back and teaching for another year

Hmmmm that's not the same thing as 'teaching' (also, being in another country) (also, earning money)

I dunno, I'm tempted to head back to japan for the same reasons.

I applied to the NYCTF program but they're not hiring this year :/ With a master's, after all, you could teach college.

Still, figure sticking it out for a little longer couldn't hurt... Money's tight everywhere after all; I know most of the companies in Tokyo have been scaling back since late '07, so I'm (reasonably) happy day-jobbing it here while chunking on the webcomix.

So while I, an English teacher (of the highest caliber) here in Korea, was spending this Saturday googling myself and others, the thought occurred to me that my favorite phrase from my youngest students would reap hilarious results, that phrase being "Eric Teacher is Die". Several clicks later i'm here. I've browsed through your gallery on your webpage and the stuff you've posted here, and this browsing has created a soft spot somewhere in my normally hard, shiny thorax.

I didnt do the research, but i'm pretty sure youre a woman, considering the sensibilities of your stuff. If that be the case, I am extremely attracted to you, and if we were to meet I would most certainly try to have sex with you, which, in my opinion, would be a most satisfying experience for both parties involved.

If that not be the case, sweet stuff, bro, keep up the good work.

I've said what i came to say, no further questions need be asked. A good day to you ma'am (sir?).
